² Abram had become very wealthy^(A) in livestock^(B) and in silver and gold.

¹² For the generations to come^(A) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,^(B) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring.

¹⁶ To Sarah he said, “I am giving your brother a thousand shekels^[a] of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.”

¹³ and he said to Ephron in their hearing, “Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.”

¹⁴ Ephron answered Abraham, ¹⁵ “Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels^[a] of silver,^(A) but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”

¹⁶ Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver,^(B) according to the weight current among the merchants.^(C)
